Every now and then it's nice to relax with a simple romance - which is how I ended up viewing the book. To be honest, I assumed it was the beginning for Adelaide and Credric and was disappointed to discover that the series continued with a change in characters within the same world. I think the problem was that I skimmed over the Adelaide's time within the glittering court, finding the daily life rather drawn out aside from the secret romance. Her life after was more entertaining, however it did seem rather rushed.
Overall, I enjoyed it but it didn't stay with me once the book was closed.

Between a 4.5 and 5.
I'm not sure why this book is so low rated. It's great! The love story is swoon-worthy and the plot takes really cool twists and turns. There were many times during the book that I had no idea where the story was going...and to be honest...I have no idea where the series is going! It could have just ended right after the first book with the exception of a few character things. I can't wait to see where the story heads next.

This is a good story, took me a while to get into it because the plot bothered me at first. But with the way the author vivid writing brings this world and details to life kept me reading.
Adeliaide is a countess who runs away to avoid an arranged marriage only to find the Glittering Court pretty much does the same thing. The girls come from lower society, groomed to perfection and then sent on an ocean voyage to a new colony.
Cedric is the son of the man behind this business. He sees nothing wrong with what his father is doing until he becomes friends with the girls. He keeps arranging parties and introducing the girls to men who will bid on their contract.
Somewhere in the middle the story shifts from contracted marriages to how the colonies are being formed and why shome religions are still illegal even though they were told different. Also the introduction of the gold mining was abrupt it quickly melted into the original story. Also what some of the girls did in secret didn't come out until almost the end was an unexpected surprise but it ended the story in a good spot
reread as audio, great narrator

I am a massive Mead fan, but this book, it was good, but not great. I do plan to read the second one since I did like Mira character from what we've seen of her in the book.
A little bit of fluffy YA fantasy. The story was all over the place... But I still enjoyed it.
I had a lot of fun with this one! There was definitely more to the plot than I was expecting.
I went into this thinking it was going to be mostly fluffy, but there's so much political and religious intrigue, scandal, danger and adventure. I couldn't put it down.
I also really enjoyed the characters and their stories. I'm also excited to continue the trilogy to learn more about Mira and Tamsin's stories from what Adelaide doesn't get to see.
My biggest complaint is that it was a little jarring at times to remember that these girls were okay they were being literally sold as brides to wealthy men and that was sometimes a hard concept to get on board with. I think if it had been more of a matchmaking situation than selling brides, I probably would have gone for a full 5 stars.

I was very happy to finally finish reading this book after reading the sample that NG gave me. And BTW I enjoyed it. Slightly different then her other books but lately she has different books than Vampire Academy and sorts. I liked Soundless also even tho that one I wanted more fantasy in it. But this one was great. A bunch of spins and heroic girls! Good Job!
I really liked this book. I loved the premise and as with all of Mead's books, the characters are likeable. There were a few parts that dragged a little for me but overall I liked the book and I can't wait for the next one!
I have honestly loved this book and although I was very excited all the way through I missed the ending slightly
The main character is Adelaide a higher member of society until she finds out the options available to her are marriage to a guy she has no choice in or a choice of men she gets to choose from. That is essentially what is going on although she very easily reaches the top of the hierarchy in the women the men get the chance to meet. Adelaide however falls for not one of her potential suitors but the guy who recruited her.
There are a lo of secondary characters although I now know for a fact that some of them are going to get their own books
The storyline is excellent and I wish there were other books like this. The pacing is also excellent except from I missed the last few chapters
4 stars
