The Glittering Court

Dragged at times and isn't my favorite series from Richelle Mead. It didn't help that I wasn't a fan of the main character. I actually am more interested in the other girl's stories, which is why I'll continue to read this series.

This book reads like dystopian colonialism. Is that even a thing? It should be because I’m hooked.

Adelaide is a countess, but her family has fallen on hard times and she’s about to be married off for money. Enter Cedric, looking for impoverished girls to turn into proper ladies to become wives of wealthy men in a new frontier. Adelaide pays her maid so she can take her spot in the glittering court. There, she meets and befriends Mira and Tamsin, who are also hoping for new life in the new world. But Adelaide has secrets that could cost her freedom and send her back to a loveless marriage. She must protect her real identity and not let whatever is happening between her and Cedric go any farther.

Adelaide was a fascinating MC and much tougher than I would’ve initially given her credit for. I also liked that the girls weren’t just going to be married off to the highest bidder, they had a say in their future, and could find someone they truly connected with, as long as the contract with the glittering court was met. Really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to book 2 and getting MIra’s story.

LOOK AT YOUR LIFE CHOICES ASHLEY. LOOK AT THEM.

I thought this book was very good. I was captivated by the story, couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I listened to the audio version and highly recommend it. The narrator did a great job with the voices, etc.

Dnf. So very boring. I loved Mead's vampire academy but suffered through til chapter 17 before putting this one down. The characters were rather flat and I had zero interest in any of them (oh, the ship that that one character was on sank? Oh well).

If I were to write an ending for this book:
1) Tamsid (Tasmind? Tazzler?) comes back, and she's a pirate queen who raids everything, kills everyone who gets in her way and gets all the shit done.
2) boring "pagan" guy is killed by Tazzler in a spectacular way
3) the "savages" are actually a highly advanced civilization who nuke Osfrid
4) all those Syrian refugees join the "savages" and live happily ever after
5) Adelaide stops being dumb and joins up Jazzy-Pants and together their pirate fleets become mercenaries for hire

The first half was SO ADDICTIVE, but soon it became a boring trainwreck of a book.

I first read this because I love The Selection series, and was recommended this series. The first half was exactly what I wanted, it was very similar. I don't know if I recommend this or not, to be honest.
A part of me wants you to run the other way and stay away from this hot trash, but the other half say to read it yourself and see what your thoughts are.

Having loved the Vampire Academy series, I was hoping for the same reaction with this story. But I wasn't completely invested b/c it lacked a lot of something. I'm hoping book 2 will offer more of hook.
