Who would've thought that early 20th century anarchist satire could be funny?
funny
The WWI Czech Catch 22, but not as dark. Manages to keep up the sense of humor all the way through. I dock it 1 star because of the extraordinary length and (paradoxically) because it is unfinished.

This radio play version takes the epic Good Soldier Svejk's 600+ pages and compresses it into about 2 hours. Several of the wonderfully eccentric characters are gone and Svejk's adventures are a bit curtailed, as are the long rambling stories he tells, but the spirit of this Czech folk and war hero is captured. It brings to mind the truth that war is not a noble and just proposition and it raises the currently and often unpopular question of whether those who "make the ultimate sacrifice" die in vain.
ah, after a year and half of reading and neglecting the book I finally finished. Shvejk is .. eh, he's simple.. but you can't call him thick. He is sincerely, innocently simple and gets himself in the strangest of situations and has the strangest of stories to tell. It's set during the First World War.
I started reading this book because my father always laughed so hard while reading it that he was crying. I didn't really get all of the jokes as well, I guess it's a book for guys. For guys who have been to army.

You do not find them much better! A delightful book, full of humour and with a great anti hero as MC.
The clever ways our good soldier tries to escape battle (and at the same time he convinces everyone he cannot wait to go to the war) are really entertaining. The social criticism is effective as it is brought in a humourous way.
Reading this novel, I found it sometimes hard to realize it had been written almost a century ago.
