After three books, I'm still not sure whether or not I like this series. This offering certainly did not please me. I felt as though I was reading a good first draft of what had the potential to be a great story, but it shouldn't have been published before some serious tightening of both the plot, and the style. A vague and poorly-explained "threat" to the Library, a half-hearted "betrayal" by a minor character Irene should not have felt anything for in the first place, and a plot that moves along mostly through boring and repetitive exposition. Disappointing.

While not the greatest books ever written, I will give Cogman credit for staying on the level that she has achieved. No dip in quality by book three, they're still a lot of fun to read, in spite of the flaws and this one even had a touch of feels to it. It did hint at a love triangle which I dearly hope she won't persue, though.
Fun and enjoyable books for a bit of light reading.

Mild spoilers ahead

On a side note. I do wish Cogman would put in a bit more research. She likes to use exotic animals in her books but she seems not to know a whole lot about them. In her first novel she used a large group of Alligators to be set loose in a room in order to kill everyone. An odd choice as alligators are relative solitary, aquatic ambush predators. Not really suited for a group assault on dry land. I don't think it would be all that hard to avoid them, at least I could think of a LOT of better suited animals to use for such a purpose. This time around she decided to use a spider infestation and chose the King Baboon Spider for her purpose, I'm assuming because it is huge and scary looking. One does get the idea she just googled "big ass spider" or something. Apart from the creatures not behaving how they should, they're also supposed to be used as a murder attempt. King Babboons are Tarantulas however, big and scary looking and while their bite is very painfull, it is not however lethal to humans. Making them a poor choice for attempted murder, especially considering the wide range of other arachnids far more suited for the job. Which is another thing, I hate it when people refer to spiders as "insects". Quite a character flaw in someone like Irene who is big on proper use of language.

The pace really picks up in this book of the series. There is a direct fight against the main antagonist by our heros.
