This book is kind of a masterpiece in my opinion. The main characters and their stories are a deeply sad story of the black experience in early twentieth century America. It tackles big themes like colonialism, racism and sexism without making them seem like problems of the past, which a surprising quantity of historical fiction send to do. I also loved that, a book written in the eighties, has characters who might be LGBTQ. The first posts of the book can be difficult to read because of the depiction of rape and domestic assault but it is definitely worth stocking with just to see the happiness that the empowered women folk see by the end. I also love that the men get banged only when they can learn to be nice to Celie, our protagonist, otherwise simply being referred to as mister. It is a testament to Alice Walkers writing choose that this doesn't get confusing at any point.
Graphic: Rape, Domestic abuse, Racism, Sexism, and Sexual violence
Moderate: Sexual content and Drug use
