I'm not sure how to explain how this book made me feel.

It was awful, but it was beautiful too.
It covers so many topics in a way that you don't feel heavy with information while reading, everything just comes and you feel sometimes sad and sometimes happy.

The start of the book feels quite dark, but life slowly starts to shine for the characters. They never forget the darks things that happened in their past, they just learn to live with it, accept it and decide to move forward, towards whatever life has for them now.

EDIT: I found out this author has defended TERF views and therefore she herself is her own kind of bigot. Very disappointing. I don’t feel comfortable having her as a 5 star author in that light.

This is a gorgeous story about black womanhood, family, sisterhood, love, and misogyny in the black community. I was hooked from page one, although some themes might be too heavy for some readers. Alice Walker does an excellent job of taking us back in time. The views on the diaspora are interesting as well, as are the characters thoughts on God. Overall just a beautifully told story. I especially liked that at a certain point two separate stories were being told at once.

I really liked each and every one of the themes explored as well as the incredible character development. The story in itself wasn't very engaging, however, and I wish it was just a bit longer, especially the ending, to get more out of it. The writing style was interesting and really showed the different journeys of Celie and Nettie well. Overall, I was mostly interested in Celie and Shug's relationship, as well as Celie's growth as a person, and the uplifting ending was very welcome, especially after all the hard themes throughout the book.

This was very brutal but interesting nonetheless! I learned a lot and loved the complexity of the characters.
