“It isn’t about winning or losing; it’s about freeing yourself from reacting to your parents’ emotional contagion”

I was not expecting to feel seen from this book. Gibson takes you on journey to understanding the different types of emotional immature parents and subhanallah, what a realisation.

The part from me where it really hit was when she discussed internalisers and externalisers, what is like to be an internaliser and how to free yourself the grasps from expectations of your emotional immature parents or relatives. As an internaliser myself, she really honed on the battles we face and how to process all of them. Alhamdulilah, I have developed of more an awareness myself then before reading this book.

Of course, not all things from the book can be applied such as cutting contact with relatives as this is a major sin in Islaam. However, whilst we are commanded to have Ihsan with our parents and maintain the ties of kinship especially when they are not reciprocal, we can still protect ourselves from falling into their emotional turmoils and remain cordial at all times

‘There’s no reason you can’t have a happy life starting right now. I actually think it can feel more rewarding to give yourself a happy life now as an aware adult than to have always had it from the beginning. To be aware and present at the birth of your new self as an adult is pretty incredible stuff. How many people get to be awake and aware for the emergence of the person they were always meant to be? How many people get to have two lifetimes in one?’

I loveeeeeddd this book sm
