I don't quite understand why some people have labeled this as a "cozy mystery". In my mind something can't be a cozy mystery if it includes rape the way this book does. It really pushes the line in terms of content with regards to that particular storyline. Otherwise I wasn't particularly impressed one way or another with the book. I liked Mrs. Rodd as a narrator and investigator. I was surprised how the mystery centered on a retelling or reimagining of a plotline from David Copperfield. I'm not sure all Dickens fans would approve of what Saunders has done with some familiar characters (renamed so you're left in suspense) but I never liked a certain character in David Copperfield so I'm not too upset with the direction Saunders took the story in her book. It also explores some interesting themes about the place of women in Victorian society and the main character is forced to overcome her prejudices towards other women.

Eh, it was OK. Some good characters. But after a while, I lost count of how many men and women had fallen into unacceptable romances, and it started to feel a bit silly. Then the convenient coincidences started and I almost gave up.

Was I the only one who thought That Man was going to go implausibly over the rail of the ship?

A little bit confusing at times with all the characters and plot. But still enjoyable.

I enjoyed this Victorianesque mystery. It was well plotted and I liked meeting the different characters. From the epilogue, it doesn't look like this is a series. I hope that we get to see more of our sleuth though.
