Love Gambit and the first half of this was fun but it just sort of felt meandering and choppy in the second half.

Not bad, but just once I wish there were a Gambit story that didn't feel like a series of shorts.

Gambit is my favorite character from X-Men, so I was totally thrilled that he got his own book. I'm amused by the basic premise, that he's not quite suited to be a hero, definitely not to be a teacher, so maybe he should just go back to being a thief. This storyline is sort of like Lara Croft and James Bond go to Louisiana.

Gambit: King of Thieves

This graphic novel covers time that Remy aka Gambit is not with the X-Men. He is on a mission.

And of course, everything that can go wrong does. He even has to get help from his ex, Rogue.

I loved this! I mean, I may be a little biased because I love Gambit anyways, but this was a seriously fun volume. And like a friend of mine stated in his review, it's the first Marvel NOW! title I've read that I truly enjoyed. So as long as Marvel doesn't screw this series up, I'll continue to eagerly anticipate each new volume.

After marathoning all of the X-Men films, I really wanted to jump into some of the comics. Once A Thief seemed like a good place to start, as not only is it from the Marvel NOW! line of comics, it also collects the first seven issues of Gambit's comics, a character I have very limited knowledge of. I often find that comic collections are confusing and offer little to know prior information of characters, so the fact that this starts from the very beginning of his story line had me very excited to pick it up.

For starters, I really like the artwork. Just having a quick flip through it showed me that it was crisp and clean, with lots of lovely colour schemes in the panels. Marvel really does some to know what it's doing when to comes to artists, and I really cannot fault the talent of all the pencilers and inkers involved.

I did like Gambit as a character, and I was interested to read about him and his abilities. He seemed very well prepared and equipped for everything, and not just because of his mutation. He seemed to give off that kind of 'I know what I'm doing' vibe, and his costume was really cool. I also really liked his mysterious partner in crime. She was independent and headstrong and I was interested to see what she was up to. The way she and Gambt interacted and worked together, even though she didn't want his help was nice too.

I did like the plot, it was fun, even if it was a bit of a typical thief plot. But then again, the title of this volume is Once a Thief, so I shouldn't really have expected anything different.

Overall, I did really enjoy this graphic novel, and I think I'll definitely be carrying on with the series.

Somewhat fun book featuring one of the better xmen. This could have been a little more exciting.

The problem I have with many Gambit stories is Gambit, who, while not quite as deserving of fanboy derision perhaps as he used to be, is still a cool power trapped in a personality-free cuteboy package. He's the boyband superhero, quirky instead of interesting, and you won't ever get your shoes wet reading him.

The first arc here has a Kingpin copy as the villain, and dialogue cloned from Warren Ellis all over the ending. Unspectacular to say the least, and would have earned only one star if not for some cool action sequences and one decent story twist.

Gambit intrigues me as a character, but this story was a bit flat. He was fun and charming and gallant and probably too goody considering who he's supposed to be. The mysterious Lara Croft knockoff was unimpressive. Why the hell is she pulling a heist in her underwear? Between that and the connect-the-dot storyline, I was sort of relieved when it was over.
