not great. .. not sure if it was supposed to be a mystery or just a story about odd people. conversation was stilted, story was akward, bit nothing really.

I've read my share of cheap little mysteries but I haven't given M. C. Beaton a shot yet. I wasn't particularly impressed with this book as it seemed to be struggling to be both edgy and current. Phrases like "Agatha consulted the google map she had printed out" and complaints that employment applications were riddled with "texting language" were cringe-worthy throughout. Murders, even once solved, seemingly happened without reason. On top of all of this, there was never a true feeling of justice being served, but instead convenient disappearances and deaths. Not a favourite.
The Agatha Raisin books alternately amuse and annoy me. Agatha is clever but predictable and I often see the author’s manipulations. But overall the books are easy reads with satisfying outcomes. I particularly liked this book because it explained a lot of the interpersonal relationships and helped me understand the background of Agatha and her P.I. Business. So really 3.5.
Agatha is still going strong! This one has her back in form. It's got to be difficult to keep a series interesting.

M.C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin is my guilty pleasure this year. I find myself constantly coming back for more, like a secret stash of chocolate. Completely addictive, especially if you're a middle-aged woman, perhaps. But I suppose that's part of the appeal: there just aren't enough books out there about middlea-aged women. We are probably the biggest readers of fictiona, but few writers are writing about us.
