After That Night

Karin Slaughter

This is #11 in the Will Trent series. I’ve read the past several so wanted to listen to this before #12 that just came out. It was really well done. The subject matter was extremely gruesome and violent sexual assault was a main theme so stay away if that is triggering to you. But the process of how they solved the case and got the proof they needed was really well done.

Karin Slaughter never misses. I've read every single one of her books and this series and the characters are my favourites. This might be pitched as a police procedural but it is at it's heart a character study and really dissects the trauma it puts it's characters through. I will honestly say Will Trent is one of my favourite male characters ever.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I think you need to read the grant county series before this one. We're still discussing the lifelong impact of things that happened 17 books ago. And it's done so well. Sara and and Will feel so real to me. I loved seeing them working as a unit and the way they've learned to discuss things. This really feels like we've seen their journey to a really healthy place in their relationship.

Faith, who I also love, describes herself in this book as "The wise cracking best friend to their hallmark movie." And sometimes, just sometimes, it can feel like that. So we love being self aware. But she has her own storyline, and I'm hoping for more books in this series because this book showed there is still more for her to come.

This book is not as graphic as some books by this author. It definitley comes with heavy topics but it's missing the shudder inducing gore of some of the other books. The themes of this book are rape, murder, kidnap, domestic abuse. Basically there's always triggers for basically everything. I think this is more plot driven. But it's a great addition to the series. I think if you love this series, you'll enjoy this book. This is more of a Sara centric book, and there's a lot of Sara and Will's relationship to enjoy - Though to be honest I always need more. I would read a book about them sitting on a couch doing nothing.

Fifteen years ago, Sara’s life changed forever when a celebratory night ended in a violent attack. However, Sara has picked up the pieces and remade her life. She’s a successful doctor and engaged to a man she loved deeply.

Sara believes she has left the past behind her, until one night everything changes. She’s working in the ER and a woman who was brutally attacked tells Sara she was sexually assaulted. As the investigation progresses, GBI Special Agent Will Trent draws an uncanny connection to the young woman’s assault to the one Sara faced years ago.

The past isn’t going to stay buried forever…

I was in a bit of a down word reading spiral and needed a good thriller to perk me up. This book did not disappoint. I loved a good medical thriller, and one of the main characters in this one is a physician turned medical examiner. I will admit that I did not realize that this book was part of a series. While I would have loved to get to know some of the characters more, I am not upset or feel that I was missing a ton by starting on this one. I had enough information to still have an enjoyable read. There were so many twists and turns – the big one at the end was my absolute favorite! This is a long book, but I did enjoy getting to spend the extra time with the characters. This is for sure a series I could see myself getting into and really loving.

If you are looking for a gripping and very entertaining thriller, then check this one out.

Thank you to the publisher, William Morrow, @Williammorrowbooks, and Netgalley, @netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book was amazing

The author explaining why so many rape cases go unreported or thrown out of court was perfectly articulated

Many rape victims biggest fear about reporting it is not being believed

Imagine being sexually assaulted and going to the police people who you should trust and should support you for them to ask
"Did you do anything to lead the rapist on ?

"Did you tell him No?" Im sorry but its crazy its kinda hard to speak through duct tape!!

Its not rape unless your attacker hears you give a firm No

How many men have raped women and walked away free from court because a jurys mind can work like this?

If shes too pretty that means she led him on . If shes not pretty enough that means shes lying and looking for attention.
If the rapist is good looking then theres no way he would have to force women for sex

This all boils down to it doesn't matter if what i was wearing was provocative.
It doesn't matter if i flirted with him at some stage
It doesn't matter if he was a date and he expected sex at the end of the date

The point is NO means NO
If it was not consensual then it was sexual assault!!

if i could rate just the last 100 or so pages, it would be a 4.5 for me. overall it wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great.

Kept me very entertained, but there were a couple of typos? At least on the kindle version and that drives me nuts.
