Book four in the Artemis Fowl series. Artemis Fowl has had his memories of faeries erased. He has now returned to his criminal ways and is about to steal a painting from a secured vault in Germany. Meanwhile, Opal Koboi has escaped and is planning to seek revenge on everyone who foiled her last plot - including the unsuspecting Artemis. Holly must restore his memory and get his help to save her reputation and all of faerie from discovery by the humans. A fabulous tale, quite suspenseful and enjoyable.
Io spero di non vedere mai più Opal in vita mia, ma dubito fortemente che il mio desiderio verrà esaudito, sigh
Probably the best in the series so far.
I'd even go as far as to say "three and a half stars" but honestly? As long as I'm not a nine-year-old boy, and I suspect that the likelihood of me becoming a nine-year-old boy is rather small at this stage, I don't think I'll ever be able to give those books more than three stars, not as long as Mulch Diggums is a relatively significant character in any case.
There's just something about flatulence and bodily functions and bare bums humour that just doesn't work for me. At all. Ick.
Other than that, yeah. I'm not really keen on Colfer's writing, but these books are certainly readable and the pace is good, and there is actual character development and stuff (even though it's nearly all tell and not show - we get told, many a time, how Artemis feels and how he thinks he's changing, instead of relying more on his actual actions carrying this message).

Third read Feb 2021
Rereading this book as an adult has shown how well this series has aged. Though I still found the book a typically good Artemis Fowl instalment, with cool plot, exciting scenes and lovable characters we've all come to know, I found this fourth book unfortunately not as engaging or exciting.
Maybe because I was so in love with the third book (it has always been my favourite of all the series), or because I am rereading it therefore the stakes aren't as high, I found myself feeling less invested in the plot. I did however still enjoy our characters. Artemis and Holly's partnership is so nice to read about, as well as Opal as a hilarious yet cunning villain.
Though not the best book in the series, still super enjoyable and fun.

Well, my first time reading the series with eBook! It wasn't easy, but the book was definitely fun!
It might not be as awesome as the previous one (so far I think this is the least awesome of the 5 books I've read), but I still enjoyed it tremendously. As always, Artemis is so cute (^_^) in his annoying attitude! I also love him and Holly (:
The story was not so interesting, but it's, as always, very smart and well-plotted and genius. Thank you, Mr. Colfer.
Can't wait to read the next book!!

At first I didn't like this one, but after rereading it I found that it was much better. Plot is somewhat confusing however.

Nothing... happened in this book... One of the major faults I find in this series (aside from it being written as if it were smarter than it is) is that the books are like 90% explaining how things work bc the world building is so flimsy.
Also, I love when fantasy writers are like "you know what this brand new untouched fantasy world of mine needs? sexism" and it's not even spicy new sexism like "women are forbidden from using magic" but it's just garden variety sexism like "women don't have important jobs" or "women aren't trusted with responsibility."
