Reread on audio in August 2018. Still loved every second.

please hold while I finish wiping my eyes and blowing my nose....... (Mary, you didn't warn me!).........

okay, ahem. so, Barry goes down in a tiny plane among the Tahitian islands, along with two other passengers and the pilot. He and newly - married Sophie (whose husband went the way of the pilot) wash up on the same shore. Dane Huckelbridge is an amazing writer. his prose is beautiful without being anywhere near overdone or bourgeoisie. He weaves in French speech but doesn't leave us hanging as to what it means. He creates plot and drama without it feeling like there would be no book without it. Really, this was just masterfully done, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Trigger warnings that are also spoiler-y follow (stop reading if you are trigger-free!!!!!):

miscarriage
stillbirth
plane crashes

I first heard about this book on the What Should I Read Next Podcast Episode 104. Link: http://modernmrsdarcy.com/104-episode/

Let me preface this by saying I have a terrible fear of flying. Of course, a few chapters in, there is a plane crash. That was just the beginning of the anxiety that persisted throughout the remaining chapters. This a very intense (sometimes humorous) story about the struggles that the two survivors endure while trying to survive on a small, uncharted Pacific island.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this very special book. It is very well written and the story plays out in such a beautiful way. The author moves seamlessly from the present to the past without giving away the most beautiful moments of the plot. What a great book and a quick read too.

This is a unique, gut wrenching tale. It took me a while to be pulled in, but then I couldn't put it down.

Beautifully written, heartfelt and almost whimsical, this is a true portrayal of how something beautiful can arise from something devastating. A plane crash catapults Barry and Sophie, two strangers who just happened to be passengers on the same plane on a deserted island. At first heartbroken and contemptuous, they warmed up to each other and learned to lean on and depend on each other to survive. The way they transform the island into their own little home is heartwarming and also whimsical, but reality strikes time and again over the years, forcing them to do the next best thing once they survived the crash - to get out of the island. The story is delightful, amusing and heartbreaking all at once, a tumultuous turn of events befitting the premise of the book.

I truly enjoyed this book and found myself thinking about it quite a bit whenever I would put it down. I’m a sucker for a survival story and Huckelbridge does a good job of combining that with beautifully sad writing. I really enjoyed this book.
