This was good, free and had fantastic rep! (Just don't try explaining the story to your friends they won't get it)

I'm between two and three stars. The magic in this book did not make sense or work for me in any way.

This novella was a bit all over the place for me. I was expecting a contemporary novel.

But then one of the characters was having a prophetic dreams and then summoning demons. Usually, I'm all for the fantasy but it was a bit jarring to get thin when I was expecting something else.

Very short, atmospheric story about a lonely Jewish trans boy, a friendly trans boy from a queer family, a crossroads demon, and a curse. I really liked it!

TW: bullying, homophobia, (unintentional) deadnaming, suicidal ideation

I read this for free here.

I've been following Sacha Lamb on tumblr for a while, and this story more than lived up to the excitement I felt whenever Lamb posted story excerpts and bits of writing. Avi and Ian's relationship is subtly, fantastically, and realistically built, and it is an utter delight to see older queer characters and, relatedly, parents who are not perfect at everything but still clearly care for their children.

This novella was so great, I loved almost everything about it, but ultimately I just couldn't give it 5 stars because it needed to be either a much longer novella or a novel, there was just too much left out, like the moment Avi and Ian became boyfriends, and the conversation of Avi telling his mom he's trans, and these things were so important that their absence was glaring. But that problem aside this was so so good, I loved the magical elements, and I loved Ian's family. I adored Avi and Ian's relationship, even if there needed to be more.
