An enjoyable fluffy romance to make geeks or fangirls smile with its affectionate integration of fanfic communities and online friendships built around fandoms, and dealing realistically with tense family relationships (related to fat-shaming and disappointed expectations) and their lasting effects on people's other relationships into adulthood--without being melodramatic. And, holy crap, a romance novel where the couple generally practices communication?!? With steamy scenes showing the partners checking in on each other throughout?!? Believable conflicts that don't make you want to scream "YOU'RE ALL IDIOTS"?!? Including friends (who are not cardboard) and friend-relationships as a significant factor, so the romance doesn't take over their entire lives?!? *mind blown*
Chapters of the story are interspersed with excerpts from the protagonists' (and some of their fanfic friends') fanfiction stories and messaging conversations, which give a glimpse into their feelings and/or thought processes. Be warned, most of the fanfic excerpts are very smutty, which can be off-putting and/or eye-rolling, though this becomes a point of silly comedy. That said, the sex scenes (when not silly-comedic fanfic) all have a caring, affectionate tone, not the nasty/exploitative/hate-sex feel some romance novels use ("And these people are supposed to LIKE each other?!?" "Are the allos okay...?")
I am not a romance-novel person, but I enjoyed this one and wouldn't mind recommending it, especially to fellow geeks (ONE OF US! ONE OF US!), with the smut-factor warning in case that bothers you.
