This is such an odd book. In some ways, it's a fun, light, romance, but I find the fact that it's a published self-insert RPF disconcerting. I don't know, but overall, the book is well-written so I'd be curious to see what else the author writes.

LOVED it so much!
The rep, the characters, the fandom romance, the humor... yes to all!
Very steamy sex scenes also, be warned ;)

This one was entirely my fault. I was reluctant to start it because, well... it's about a super hot, shy Hollywood actor who writes fanfic to make up for the crappy scripts on his famous tv show and who falls in love with a fan who's not conventionally beautiful... I knew it was going to require a huge suspension of my disbelief, but honestly, which romance doesn't?? But I didn't expect this.

Mild spoilers ahead

April was ok but Marcus's perfection made me roll my eyes so far back that I'm still seeing my spine. The "body positivity" here basically is at the expense of turning EVERYONE ELSE (expect Marcus, of course) into a fat-phobic asshole. The relationship of both MCs with their parents is problematic af - I thought this was going to be a bonding point for the characters, but no. Basically both of them have neglecting, horrible parents who value appearances / education over the wellbeing and happiness of their kids, and that's it. No discussion, no trying to fix relationships, just arguments and ultimatums. The fanfic talk was funny at first but it soon turned tedious and disruptive and the whole pace of the story was incredibly uneven and bumpy. And for a book about loving the important things and not appearances, it's funny how April decided that Marcus had hidden depths in their first date. Just not for me.

There are so many things I liked about this book -- the characters, the positive body-image and just generally POSITIVE message, the fact that these adults in their 30s can still have hobbies and make new, good friends (please please please let that part continue to be true), the steamy romance -- but I got to say, the not-so-subtle FU to David Benioff and D.B. Weiss was just *chef's kiss*.

I don't want to give away too much, other than to say that I greatly enjoyed the concept of talented, intelligent actors venting their frustrations with how their character arcs are developing (or not developing, as the case may be) by writing fix-it fics on AO3. And I don't even usually like meta.

Also, I legit want to read Gods of the Gate, the fictional book series that inspired the show the main character stars in. Because it is high-time for a 21st Century adaptation of The Aeneid.

On more spoiler-y notes, I will leave you with this quote from near the end of the book, which encapsulates the theme nicely: "Life isn't all misery, and finding a path through hard, hard lives to joy is tough, clever, meaningful work." Thank you Olivia Dade for putting it into words, and thank you to all romance writers (and fanfic writers!) who put it into practice.

Cute fast paced book. The movie/fan fic excerpts didn’t add to the story line. Overall good quick read.
