A few years ago (was it four? How quickly time flies!) I heard Dean Koontz speak at Comic Con. At the time, I'd never read any of his books, nor was I particularly interested (it was later I really started reading horror). The panel was in Ballroom 20, and my sister and I were there to save our place for a later panel.
Then, he began to talk about his experience writing the Odd Thomas books. He spoke about how the idea came while he was working on another book, and the character was so strongly realized, that Koontz had to stop what he was working on to write the first chapter longhand (two things he didn't normally do). He went on to say such wonderful things about the character, I knew I had to read this book. Any idea so strong the author is driven by it had to be worth a look.
I am so glad I crashed that panel. Odd is a wonderful character who keeps me unable to leave his world without knowing knowing how each adventure (or misadventure) ends. I am continually moved to tears by the sheer poetry of the language used.
Odd Apocalypse continues in the vein of the other books: beautiful, heart wrenching, and, ultimately, uplifting. Odd and Annamaria, the enigmatic young lady Odd befriends in "Odd Hours", take refuge at Roseland, a house with a horrifying mystery.
I enjoyed the unraveling of the mystery in this book. The pace was just slow enough that I'd come to realizations about what I thought was going on just before the truths were revealed. I enjoy a mystery that allows me to make guesses and guides me as to what needs to be guessed next. The characters were well fleshed out and suitably evil. And, as always Odd manages to translate any vulgarity thrown at him with charm and imagination.
One thing I love about these books is no matter what horror is in them, no matter how evil and cruel the villains are, there is always a message of hope conveyed.
My only complaint is after waiting so long, I'm already done with the book and now have to settle in for another wait. I implore Mr. Koontz: Please, write swiftly!

Odd's life just gets weirder and more spell-binding. I love the ghost dog and his buddy!

I am definitely losing my taste for the story lines of this series. I am however still in love with Odd,so I am persevering through. Don't make me regret it, Dean.
Not being an overly great fan of Horror I still very much like Dean's Odd books.
Let me just correct that Nikola Tesla was not as great as Edison, Edison nor any of his contemporary's could hold a candle to Tesla bar none.
The technology in use at this mansion might be a bit far fetched but if anyone could pull this off it would probably be Nikola Tesla. What Odd supposedly looks up on internet about Tesla is documented fact as are the parting words of this 'ghostly' Tesla. And that's not half of it...
A very nice Odd story with an educating element.

Review to come... let's just say "Odd Apocalypse" is more of the same Odd Thomas, which is not a bad thing.
It lacked the details I was looking for and gave too many to things I could have skipped over. My full review is on my blog at http://knowitnotsomuch.blogspot.com/2013/01/odd-apocalypse.html
