I finished Thorn the day before starting and finishing this. Hands down I'm loving this author more and more. I can't wait to see what she'll set out to show us next.

I'm having trouble trying to figure out what exactly to say about this story. It is only 24 pages, so there's not much to talk about for the review. I guess I will say that I wasn't all that fond of the story. I'm not sure if it was the length getting in the way of development of the characters and the plot, but I just couldn't really get into the short story. The story failed to capture my interest and I didn't connect with the characters. I thought that the quality of writing was very good, though. "The Bone Knife" is a prequel short story to a trilogy that will begin to be published in 2013. I assume that the trilogy will be better, because Khanani will have more room to fully develop the characters and the plot.

I'm just not sure that this idea for a story is meant to be in short story form. I think it would do better as a full-length novel, which is why the trilogy should be much better. I would recommend for readers to skip this story and just read the novels in the trilogy when they come out. But, if you are pumped about the upcoming trilogy and want to learn about the characters beforehand, by all means read "The Bone Knife". I hope you enjoy it more than I did!

Whenever people try to make characters have flaws, they go for lazy, snarky, or something else society generally looks past. This author goes for a club foot. (Not saying that’s a flaw, though it is a hinderance society generally makes fun of.) It’s refreshing to have a character, (Rae), that isn’t perfect or conventionally beautiful, already setting me up to love her.

Here’s the second thing the writer did that I really liked. Reportedly, the inspiration behind this was based off how disconnected fantasy families usually are. Protagonists are often orphaned or have dysfunctional backgrounds. Khanani wanted to have a story where that wasn’t the case, which is nice to see.

The descriptions were well done, even though I felt the writing could’ve been more clear as to who was saying and doing things. I caught myself having no idea who was talking more than a few times, plus there wasn’t enough explanation as to how the magic worked/what they intended to do with it.

The plot isn’t terribly exciting, but it doesn’t have to be. It carries a lot of tension in a unique plot and world. Plus there’s a hot faeire. So.

For its all around uniqueness, docked only a point for some confusing writing, The Bone Knife earns a four out of five.

I listened to this at the end of the audiobook of Thorn, because I saw it was a companion short story and really wanted more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

This was included at the end of the [b:Thorn|52347232|Thorn|Intisar Khanani|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562315726l/52347232._SX50_SY75_.jpg|19122499] e-book I just finished. It's set in the same world as Thorn, and a minor character appears here. Its focus is on Rae who wants to protect her sister, who has magical abilities that have not been reported to the kingdom as they are supposed to do, when a faerie comes to buy horses from their father. This story seems to set things up nicely for [b:The Theft of Sunlight|17317376|The Theft of Sunlight (The Theft of Sunlight, #1)|Intisar Khanani|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|23985987].

Really just a long chapter teaser for the new book, theft of sunlight. Not much to say other than I'm interested.
