Honestly he sounded pretentious and his writing annoyed me, it felt like he tried too hard to be poetic and ethereal.

This is without a doubt one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read.

A series of vignettes, some longer, some very brief, detailing the authors encounters with the animal of the chapters title. But really so much more..... a sense of the environment at the time, the mood of the author, even a venue for the factual extra ordinariness of the animal in question.

All this in language that is a joy to read. Words strung together in such a way as to take your breath away, stop your reading and savor the sentence.

Childs has other works published and I will be seeking them out.

Although a nice, calming read, the book comes off as a little too spiritual and hippie-esque for a science minded person

I got halfway and decided it's not for me. The way he writes feels like he's trying too hard to be interesting.

By far one of my favorite books of 2016 - the sort I angrily wish Kerri and I had had a chance to write first - made all the more powerful by how many of Childs' experiences mirror my own, and yet his words are still no less potent for that shared experience.

[5 stars for being as close to perfection as any outdoor book I've recently read.]
