I picked this book up because I had read Moren-Garcia's newest book "Mexican Gothic" and loved it. She impressed me again. I didn't know much about the plot, but it ended up being a glorified road trip of a poor girl and a god of death. The mythology of this book was just enough to keep me interested but too much that I felt overwhelmed by the fact I didn't know much about Mayan mythology. The slow burn between the main characters was charming, and I appreciated the moments between them. Sadly, I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I finished and then just...stared at the wall. It's one of those plots where you know not much can happen by the end, but it still leaves you empty.

I like this one. Even though it’s sort of a heavy subject, I think it’s the lightest novel I’ve read by this author. It was an interesting journey.  I was worried at one point about where it was going, but my worries were appeased in the end.

Overall, it’s a good read and I recommend it. But I think SMG writing lends itself well to beautiful imagery, and I bet the movie/show version of this would be fun to see in the right hands.

A fantasy with a strong female protagonist that goes on a quest with the Mayan God of Death to help him regain his throne of the Underworld. Loved the historical setting and the Mexican folklore! I’m a huge fan of the ancient Maya so this was a fun one for me

I záporné postavy mají něco do sebe.

Bohové jadeitu a stínu mají své kouzlo.
