i had this downloaded on my kindle for travelling and was not expecting to enjoy this book so much!! the main two characters were great but the dynamics between the more minor characters were what stood out to me because i was pretty much invested in everyone. also loved the historical setting with the sprinkle of fantasy too. i've definitely given better books lower ratings but this was just very enjoyable to me :)
Romeo and Juliet with rival gang families in 1930s Shanghai with monsters loose in the city. Love it. Particularly liked the second-chance love story, as that fixes the insta-love problems with the original R+J.

I felt this book was a bit of a let down given how highly I'd been recommended it for years. The overall pace was incredibly slow and somehow a lot of nothing happens that takes up over a hundred pages. I will say the reading was easy, it's just that I anticipated it would have more in it for such a large book.
The characters never really felt fully fleshed out and I never fell in love with any of them. I felt the change in perspectives could have been really well done if approached differently.
Overall, it was an easy read and a good book if you're looking for something to fill time, but I generally felt it was lacking in too many aspects to be a recommended book.

i loved this book smmm!! the writing was so good (especially the descriptions like the prologue) and i loved the entire setting of Shanghai in the 1920s. fantasy w the enemies to lovers trope is literally one of the best tropes to read

I liked this retelling of Romeo and Juliet. I don't really know the original story, but I guess some things were the same?!?
anyways, since I didn't know what the book was about, I was very surprised that it went a bit in the “fantasy direction”. still, I was able to follow it all :D
also, the characters are chef kiss, urgh so good!!

This book itself put me in a reading slump. I had such high expectations because of what I’d already heard however those expectations were far from met.
The characters kept making basically the most predictable decisions every time and the romance tension was unnecessary past like 3/4 of the book was through. Nothing about it made me want to keep reading, I felt like I was reading the same situation over and over.
There were side characters with subplots that didn’t feel needed in the story, and the main conflict didn’t hook me, didn’t make me want to read and make sure they found a resolution.
