The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd

Reading this was a lot like reading The DaVinci Code. On the surface it seems like a smart, sophisticated puzzle plot, but the more you think about it, the more it makes NO SENSE. I read the first 20% and then flipped over and read the last 20% and that was more than enough to let me know this book is not for me. I started to list a bunch of examples and then decided I didn’t care enough.

Edited to add: since once again I heard someone going on about how great this book is, I will give you an example. Early on, she refers to the size of a wealthy man’s private company as making Google and Apple look small. If you would read right past that without blinking, you’ll be fine. But if you roll your eyes thinking, seriously? Those are two of the three biggest corporations on the planet, how can there possibly be a privately owned company that makes them “look small”? - this may not be the book for you. I read another thirty pages past that, so on its own, that wasn’t a deal breaker, but every few pages there would be another eye-roll, until it was just too much. There you go.

I was told there would be magical maps.

And I guess that’s true of this book. The problem was- it just wasn’t…magical enough. This book droned on for so long before it got into the meat of what was happening. I didn’t care enough by the time Peng actually revealed the twists and turns. By that point, I just wanted it to be over.

Two stars because turns out, it’s based on a true story! That’s the most interesting part of this book. Not good. I’d say classify as YA but that’s kind of an insult to YA.

A little long, but enough twists for me, even though I guessed some - and most I did not.
Likeable characters.
Highly recommended fantasy for fans of maps and libraries (and the nerd found within).

And after the book comes proof that truth is stranger than fiction...
Have bought the ebook (pre-ordered 10 days before publication) and the audio-version, which came recommended from Book Riot.

Would like to see this filmed as a short series for streaming (Disney / Apple / Netflix / Prime?).
