I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to read Paulsen’s memoirs and nonfiction. This was like a warm, fuzzy hug. The book is short as Paulsen focuses on 9 dogs he’s owned and reflects on their personalities and the way they shaped him. The stories are inspiring, heartwarming, adventurous, and funny. Love!

I hope that adults don't let tags like 'juvenile' or 'teen' attached to this book keep them from reading it. It's an easy read, but really geared towards dog lovers not necessarily young people. Each chapter is a short story about a special dog Paulsen encountered. All are interesting. Some are laugh out loud funny.

Sweet, heartwarming story of the dogs that made an impact on the author’s life.

This book is special in that it is autobiographical, but it reads like an animal story. Paulsen did a great job of telling the reader about his life without seeming like he was talking about himself at all. The book is filled with incredible dog stories that anyone would appreciate. I actually thought at one point that it wasn't doing a very good job of telling me about his life. It wasn't until later, as I was talking to some students, that I realized how many of the facts about his life I had absorbed while becoming lost in the stories. That's talent!

This book made me want to have a dog and have unconditional love like Gary Paulsen had with his dogs.
