The central theme of this book is the death of a child left alone in a hot car for an extended period. It’s inspired by real life events & cases. The story was intense and gripping. I didn’t see any of the twists coming. Loved it.
dark medium-paced

Leila reluctantly agrees to take her nephew, Max, to daycare but tragically forgets him in her hot car due to work related pressure. When Max is found unresponsive, his death triggers a criminal trial, threatening to shatter the bond between Leila and her sister, Yasmin, as everyone questions whether it was a fatal accident or a deliberate act.

Y'all this one was so heartbreaking. I don't read a lot of crime thrillers because I do find the endless questioning of people in the courtroom to get really repetitive and drawn out. While that definitely happened in this book in the middle for me, I ended up really enjoying many aspects of this. There were lots of twists that continued to shift what I believed to be true the whole time, and I was never able to figure out the intricacies of each layer as they were revealed. What an infuriating book, but also, when not bogged down with excessive lawyer interactions, a really emotional thriller that delivers in so many ways!

I hate that I saw the ‘big’ plottwist coming from the start. And the ending??? Meh. I did enjoy this book and couldn’t put it down so guess 4 or 3,5. I don’t ever want to read it again but I did fly through it wanting to know what happened.

Something fishy is going on…

Something fishy is definitely going on was my thought from the start. But isn’t there always in these books and that’s what’s making them so good. I love to see if I can solve the mystery before it’s revealed and in this one I did but not to early. It was a good one. I am definitely reading more from her.

I found this difficult to put down to be honest! I found myself actively disagreeing with Shep’s theories! I thought he was just a mega paranoid detective, seeing the worst in everyone! I thought MAYBE at a push that Andrew knew more than he let on purely because he was so willing to forgive Leila for killing his child (accidentally or not!). I thought Leila was just a pawn and I was so shocked to find that she was actually at the helm of the plotting. There are so many unlikeable characters in the novel. They lie, cheat, and all of them are so inexplicably selfish at different points, but it is such a captivating and heartbreaking story.

The plot twist… I have whiplash. I was NOT expecting any of that! I did, however, really struggle with Leila and Andrew’s motivation to decide to kill a child and the fact that Leila took about 3 seconds to be convinced to gamble with her career, lifestyle, any hope of adopting her own child, freedom, and take her nephew’s life. I think that’s what made this miss 5 stars for me. It annoyed me that she and Andrew tried to pass it off as if they were murdering a child as a favour to Yasmin? I was actually losing my mind at their hero complex!
