Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad

I've tried reading Conrad and now I've tried listening to him, but it's all just a guy yapping at me nonstop. I just can't get into him, even when he talks about boats.

I was impressed by the framing of this story. Not the frame story itself - the tale being recounted by Marlow as he sits on his boat on the Thames - but the framing device of having us imagine what us Britons must have looked like to the Roman invaders. This thought stayed in my mind throughout the whole tale. As the for the moral question at the core of it... I don't know. If I was supposed to see Kurtz as someone driven mad by the darkness that colonialism brought to Africa, I wasn't convinced. To me Kurtz was as much the darkness as all the rest of the cruel and exploitative white men. He found his place where he could let the mask slip completely without consequence and revelled in it. Interesting story, a little hard to follow at times, but enjoyable.
