An interesting look into colonialism and our relationship to nature. Nature is presented as this brute force that can alienate humans and for these characters, this eventually turns into slight madness. The story is written by a man telling his friends about his life experiences which makes the story feel quite personal. The many comments referring to the title were a also bit too one the nose for me.

Been meaning to read this for decades and don’t got round to it, triggered by a ‘Rest is History’ podcast about the Belgian Congo.
Perfect storytelling on the theme of colonialism.

What a complicated book. I truly don’t quite know what to say.
It has its issues okay let’s not lie here but it is very layered and deeply atmospheric at times. Some paragraphs were like the most beautiful prose.

I am so sorry, but I literally hated opening up this book. We have had some interesting conversations in class, but I am so glad I don't have to read this anymore.

Chilling tale of a steamboat operator who is tasked with working for a company who is in the business of selling ivory and anything else they can strip from the bounty of Africa.

The jungle and darkness that pervades the steamboat gives you the chills. As does the danger that lurks around every bend in the river.

There are cannibals on the steamboat, and natives who attack.

It is a bit of a jumbled mess in places as the way the story is written (as being told by a narrator), it is hard to discern whether it is narrative or dialogue, and when it is dialogue, exactly who is speaking.

Not my favourite. Very lengthy descriptions and little plot.
