Simply put, it is hard to keep reading and there is little lesson to be learned.

Humans can do awful things? There are many better ways to convey that message. I know it is a classic, but I don't think it is worth reading the whole thing. It is easily forgotten, and nothing really grabs you or compels you to finish reading the book, other than to say you've read it.

Judge this book not by the antiquated worldview of its narrator, but by the light that it shines on the darkness that lives in the heart of man, both “civilized” and “savage.”

Some good proses here and there but the storytelling is layered, and that's not a compliment. While the story in itself is quite a drab.
