I read this after having read Red Dragon, and can say I enjoyed it far more. Clarice is relatable and fun, but its sad that she's the only female leading character of the Hannibal series. Being a trans person, I think the depiction of Buffalo Bill is strange and misinformed, yet nuanced, and a good example of Thomas Herris's talent in writing from the perspective of a truly demented and backwards person. The writing kept me engaged despite my tendency to get off track while reading, I hadn't felt so absorbed in a book for a long time.

This book is a tense and engaging thriller that you can't put down. Starling is a strong female lead who you can root for. Hannibal Lector's disturbing persona is fascinating even as it disgusts you and a great way to keep the plot moving forward. However, a great thriller is completely ruined by the transphobic content of the book. The story would be perfect but the way the main villain is written just completely ruined it for me.

The Silence of the Lambs is my absolute favorite movie, and the book does not disappoint. It’s beautifully written. The one thing that is a tiny bit disappointing is that some of the most iconic lines from the movie aren’t verbatim in the book, but obviously that’s not the book’s fault.
As a trans person I’m very glad about the distinction made between Buffalo Bill and actual trans people.
