I absolutely raced through this. I laughed and cried, with and for the characters.
I really believed Starr was a teenager and I found it funny how Tumblr is her world because that was so me.
This story is about so many real people and anger and pain and suffering. It gives humanity to names on the news because no one deserves to die because of their skin or who they are and what they have done.

The Hate U Give is a story told through the eyes of 16 year old Starr, who experiences police brutality, inequality and racism in various forms throughout the book. After witnessing
the horrible death of her childhood friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer, we follow Starr as she builds up the courage to speak up about what happened and show how Khalil's death
was unfair and the result of a system designed to persecute and oppress people of colour. As she faces racist comments from her closest friends as well as the media manipulating the true story of what happened
the night her friend was killed
,Starr begins to realise that she has to take action to  stop more of these events from occurring in the future.

I loved this book, not only because of how it tackled incredibly important topics such as racism and police brutality, but also because of how real the characters felt and how you began to care for them just as much as Starr did. It also shows the effect of what racism has on Starr and how much it has drastically changed her life and forced her to experience and see terrible things that she didn’t deserve to. Although it is uncomfortable to read at times, it tells you a very honest and meaningful message. It is an extremely relevant and thought provoking book and I would definitely recommend reading it.

I thought it to be a little difficult to get into during the first few pages, just because of the obvious references to the time around 2016, but other than that I couldn't put it down. Read it all in one day when I should've been studying for my final instead.

There isn’t anything that I can say to do this justice. An absolute must read.
