I feel like the writer wanted to make Annie more than a sexual character but focussed so much on the sexual scenes, while the plot scenes felt rushed and unfinished. It kind of became a selffulfilling prophecy. Didn’t like it. Not my thing.

My favorite character was abandoned and not given any closure. Weird book.

Can a book make you feel for an AI sexbot? Absolutely. This is an engaging thought experiment that delves into the concept of free will and desire for a robot created and owned by a human. It also explores concepts of loneliness, judgment, and misogyny. If you enjoyed the film, Companion, this book is for you.

This is exactly what I wanted it to be. Disturbing but somehow fun, a really compelling exploration of power, autonomy and the new face of misogyny in the developing world of AI.

Annie was a really interesting character to follow: naive (initially) but without being infantalised, clever and curious and struggling against the constraints of her programming and trying to find autonomy and figure out who she is.

This was an intricate dive into the psyche of a sentient android/cyborg? woman who is owned by a lonely and emotionally immature man. Her entire existence and her AI personality is centered around this man, who wants her purely for sex, cleaning, and potentially raising children. There is a lot of commentary on personhood/humanity, female bodies, autonomy, power and control.
Annie is such a fascinating character who grows and develops rapidly throughout the book, but man... it was a disturbing read. I felt deeply unsettled for most of it. The ending was fairly mild in comparison to the tension the narrative built, and I wonder if that was on purpose. Because for most women/people who have been in that kind of horrible "relationship" or situation, you don't get the explosive cathartic ending. If you're lucky, you just get to walk away.

I wouldn't recommend this book to just anyone. It is an extremely hard read but
Annie comes out okay and as a full person. Doug grows but that growth doesn't mean Annie stays
