Once Wrune decided to apologize and make amends, boy did he GROVEL and show through his actions that he would work to be worthy of Mina. I felt saddened for Mina and Wrune's abuse growing up. I picked up this book after being away from the series for a long time and honestly have forgotten all the previous plotlines and characters. I'm pretty sure all the Horde Kings are similar and indistinguishable haha. But Zoey has found a recipe that works for her books and I can't complain because it's enjoyable.

It was okay. I read the first three books and I barely remember the characters so I'm not really expecting something extraordinary in this book.

Favorite of the series thus far. Good, complex characters who have a relationship that evolves believably over time. No long stretches of elements I would otherwise find irritating (deception, hero being stupid, etc). The presence of magic still annoys me, but that ship has sailed.

These stories have gotten increasingly longer, more complex, and emotional. Wrune has been raised since birth to be the strongest horde leader of his time, that love is a weakness and a weapon. Watching him push through past indoctrination and come to terms with his feelings for his fated mate, Mina - ultimately groveling for her to give him another chance - was perfection.
The betrayal and abuse Mina experienced in the first half of the book was brutal - the despair and exhaustion seeped into the writing. And the pair of them stumbling into trust and love? Angsty epic romance perfection.

So much groveling

This book was PACKED with both MCs (but mostly Rowin) effing up and needing to make amends. The struggles they had were high stakes, which checks with how previous books have gone.
I liked Mina a lot. She had a crap life and Rowin was good for her. Rowin’s backstory was awful too. They both learned new kinds of strength and had a good romance thing going. And Rowin’s grovel was top tier.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: captivity, SA, abuse, child abuse (off page), starvation, murder, violence and gore
