A heartwarming story about coping with grief after losing a loved one.

I loved how it was revealed that Maisie and Grant weren't sent to Patrick so he could help them cope with the loss of their mother, his best friend. Well, they were, but more than that, by helping his niece and nephew process the loss of their mother, Patrick was able to process the loss of his husband as well, who he lost in a car accident before the events of the novel.

Nothing ever felt heavy handed and it was nice to see Patrick slowly understand how to interact with Maisie and Grant in a way that guided them, but was never overbearing towards them, even though he has little to no experience with children.

Laughed.Cried.Reflected.Hopeful.Genuinely funny. I felt a tidal wave of emotions reading this book and it was one of the best ones to read during Spring Break. Patrick taught me a lot within these pages and it truly goes to show that when someone is amazing at their craft, the characters speak for themselves. I feel like mostly everyone has read this already but it goes beyond family member watching their niece and nephew for over three months. We learn about communicating, being vulnerable, sexuality/identities, family dynamics… and a lot more.

It took a little while for me to love this book.  The first part is funny, sharp, and brittle, kind of like a sitcom. I was worried the whole book would be like that, but it grew into something much more.  Such a lovely family story

πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„πŸŽ„ (five stars, as rated in Christmas trees in July or, really, whenever the heck you feel like it because grief is a trip and sometimes you just gotta do whatever makes you happy!)

I was given a free copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Um, so this book is adorable!!!
Following the death of their mother, Maisie and Grant are sent to Palm Springs to spend the summer with GUP (gay uncle Patrick) also known as the guncle. What ensues is about 300 pages of the cutest family bonding and good-natured debauchery imaginable. I LOVED how naturally this story broaches the topic of grief in all it's various forms. Paired with the difficulties of lifelong self discovery and the intricacy of being perceived as "different" in a world that is not always the kindest about that, this book is made of magic.

My only regret is that I didn't read this book next to a pool with a margarita in my hand. #januaryproblems
