I had no desire to read this, but my best friend accidentally acquired two copies and gave me her extra one (100% planned and forced upon me). So, I promised her I would read it. (Are you reading this review right now, bestie? You probably forgot you even have an account. šŸ˜)

I have to begrudgingly admit that I enjoyed this. The world building was interesting. The writing was better than I expected, although I never want to see the words purred or growled again. The nature descriptions were lovely.

But I'm not sure I can root for a romance between an immoral and a 19 year old because that gives me the ick.

I had a hard time liking any of the characters, but maybe they'll grow on me.
Feyre? Frustrated me to no end, and she was so dumb. 😭
Tamlin? I don't trust him. He gives me "nice guy but secretly not" vibes. Can't explain it, it's just a feeling.
Lucien? The most likeable character, but the bar was low. And he's friends with Tamlin, so I can't trust him.
Rhysand: Red flags all around. Straight to jail.
Sarah Janet I see what you're trying to do with Rhysand and I'm saying... no.

I'll continue with the series mostly because I had so much fun sending voice memos back and forth to my bestie as I was reading the book and plan to do it with the next one, too. But the last quarter of the book did reel me in, and I want to know what happens next despite my reservations.

I recommend watching elle literacy (on youtube) explain why this book is lazy, racist, and more in her video "a deep dive into the worst books on booktok." she is an irish creator and talks about how maas treats her culture horribly in this book, using age old anti-irish propaganda and racist tropes from the british. it also contains really disturbing themes of non-con which are harmful. also just the gross normalization of male rage and violence and the way she make up excuses for them. there are SO many other good fantasy and romantasy to choose instead, I urge you to give this series a skip!

This book has been on my TBR for years and I was excited to finally read it. Bookstagram told me it would be good, but I feel lied to. It read like a mashup of Beauty and the Beast and Howl’s Moving Castle—two stories I love—but I didn’t love this. I didn’t like any of the characters and the story was just… blah. It was slow, I didn’t really care about what happened to any of the characters, and I predicted the plot twist close to the end.

All that being said, friends and family have assured me the series gets better as you go along, so I’ll give the second book a try. The jump from 400 pages to 600 makes me nervous it will be a giant waste of time, but hopefully I will like Mist and Fury better.

ACOTAR gets 2.5/5 for me, but I did finish and I am willing to give the second book a chance.

The first 70% of the book was... quite bad and slow. Then the last 30%, although rushed and requiring a bit of an infodump from one of the characters, was pretty good, written in an earnest fairytale-like manner, with an almost jarring tone shift. That, and the fact that I'm not the target audience for the book, made me give it a generous 3 stars.

Been on my TBR since 2020…don’t know why I didn’t pick it up sooner! This was such a fun story that I couldn’t get enough of. The pace was perfect — not too slow, not too fast — and I didn’t get bored. The enemies-to-lovers was also executed very well, and it was believable! Feyre’s conflicting emotions about falling in love with a faerie was perfect and said a lot about her character and the rift between fae and humans. The climax was well-done, each chapter leaving me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. Can’t wait to start ACOMAF next!
