The stories are fast paced and leave me constantly searching for any obscure clues to figure out the crime at the speed of Holmes, which I never manage in the end. the baffling amount of information Holmes can glean from the simplest objects is always entertaining and the back and forth between him and Watson is never dull. I love both characters and yet revel in the distinct contrast in each character.

This collection of cases is a must read to any fan of Sherlock Holmes or detective stories in general. The cases are long enough to get you hooked on the story, but also short enough so they don’t become tedious to read. This book is the kind of novel you can read little by little, case by case, without getting bored; it’s a side table book. I found some of these cases to be more original that the ones of the short novels, even though they aren’t as expanded. I also liked the fact that they are very variated in plot, you have some that are funnier and some that are darker. In this book we get to see new facets of the personality of Sherlock Holmes, as well as being able to see more of how his deduction powers work or his other abilities, like the art of disguise. Even though now I know who the culprit is in each case, I want to read the whole book again.

Two of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, and the only two that really stuck in my head: The Red-Headed League (underground tunnelling, a ginger scam!) & The Speckled Band (a cheetah and a baboon as pets! Obviously a terrible idea in real life, but fascinated me as a kid).
