I enjoyed this book, but I have trouble actually recommending it. I feel like it would be better if it were packaged with the music discussed by the two participants in these conversations. Ozawa & Murakami are fascinating and their discussions are both worthwhile & educational, but without hearing the particular recordings that they describe, I could not help but feel that I was missing out.

“I simply wanted to bring out the ways that each of us (though on vastly different levels) is dedicated to music. That was my original motive, and I like to think that, to some extent, I have succeeded.” - Murakami

This book took me quite a while to complete.  I decided to find some of the specific music pieces they discussed on YouTube, and listened to them simultaneously. I really came to appreciate the conversations and music on a deeper level. Enjoyed my experience with this book.

Learned so much about what it means to be a conductor and interpret scores, and stuck around because I so enjoyed the friendly conversation between Murakami and Ozawa. If you read, I highly recommend going to Murakami's website so you can listen to some of the pieces they discuss. It's so eye opening and I feel a whole new appreciation as I listen to classical music. 4 stars.

Murakami's knowledge of classical music is masterly, and he brings a nerdy scholarliness as well as a fanboy's enthusiasm. This was fascinating, reading a conversation between two passionate professionals who just so happen to love music.
