i had to reread this since the final of the trilogy comes out in 7 days. this book is so obviously a spin on harry potter but i don’t have the energy to care. the romance is fantastic and the mystery is so good as well. if simon doesn’t find out about davy and lucy in the finale i might actually blow a gasket.

The *angst* is so satisfying - also the Harry Potter vibes are wonderful.
I loved the world, and the magic (even though it was familiar) and I love love loved the romance and friendships between the characters. The ending was certainly something I didn’t see coming and different than most books I’ve read - definitely a must read if you’re interested in YA fantasy and enjoyed Harry Potter! I also enjoyed the inclusivity that Rainbow Rowell included :)

I did enjoy Carry On more than what I did expect from when I decided to read this. I didn't had a low expectation but I thought it would be just okay or a decent one. So from what I heard from this book was that it was like a Harry Potter Fanfiction and I'm like sure why not try this book ?
I would definitely say that the characters, Simon, Baz, Penelope and Agatha do feel like the Harry Potter characters at first, Harry, Draco, Hermione and Ron but as the story goes on, I may have still thought of them as a character inspiration, all of these character were written well and they were just so fun to read. I find them so relatable at most, like they were also feels so real.
As for the whole Chosen One, yes still reminds me of Harry Potter. But as I go on with the story, I just felt that it may be an inspired Harry Potter story but it also felt like it didn't. It feels the same and also different. I love how to book kept me confuse from the start and also intrigued but it made me want to delve more deeper from the story and yes, I devoured it happily.
Like I said, it was confusing at first with the whole back story part and it might seems that the story's dragging or there's nothing really happening at first but I did not felt it like it should be a problem for me or I did see it as a problem, no. And also some problem I did find in it. I did enjoy it.
The main reason as why I can't or I didn't gave it a 5 star rating and just settled with a 4 star rating and these were the following things that I thought should be answered in the sequel since the sequel is coming this September 24, 2019.
1. I felt that the scene with Ebb, The Mage, Simon, Baz and Penelope was very anticlimatic and lame. I was expecting an epic comfrontation, revelation and battle in this scene.
2. I believed that Simon didn't know that The Mage is his father and also knew that The Mage was the one behind Natasha's death, the vampire attack in the Nursery and can also be blame with Baz being a vampire or he did but it off-screen.
3. Why Baz didn't tell anyone that the Mage was the one behind it? Or did he but it was off-screen.
4. I thought it was also predictable in some parts but I still find it very intriguing and full of mystery book so I still did enjoy most of it.
5. I also find the book displayed racism and gender inequality which is good since it was discussed but I think Agatha and Penelope happened to have a conversation and Agatha just threw off this sexist attitude (I can be wrong).
And hopefully, I get to know the answers in the sequel. And I also don't think that Simon lost all his power like his father and mother were mages right? Maybe he haven't figured it out yet because of trauma? Or maybe he did. I don't know but the sequel's coming so I'm very excited.

I can’t imagine that this book would exist if JKRowling hadn’t come first. But unlike a simple parody, Carry On is entirely its own thing. The magic works differently, the wizarding world is different, the feel is different. The characters are similar enough that you can’t help but compare them, but they are also entirely different. I loved Fangirl and I loved this, although I’m not sure I understood 100% of what happened to the Humdrum. Looking forward to the sequel.
Edited for re-read March 2021- I still love this book and these characters. I think I understood a lot more of the nuances this time. “I choose you” in context toward the end has to be one of the sweetest declarations of love ever.

i completely adored the fantasy and world building in this book as well as all the sweet moments that happened between simon and baz as tensions rose. baz is so hopeless and queer

I already read the book and loved it, but I really loved the audiobook, it really made Simon and Baz come to life for me.
