It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat in a constant state of "oh my god" like the first one did. The build-up was slow, which is a given because of the plot being a bit different from the first. However, it all paid off in the end. The amount of devastation I felt when all the events occurred simultaneously. I adored Holly Jackson's ability to make significant callbacks to the previous book. Especially since the events in the first one that seemed useless to the Andie Bell case were significant in Jamie's.

I felt every emotion pull me apart. Bursts of anger, sadness, happiness, laughter. I was able to feel what Pippa was feeling. I JUST LOVED IT SO MUCH.

For a character that I hated in the first book because of his ideals and my distrust towards him, I didn't expect to cry over him the hardest. It all made sense. He wanted to live and experience a life that was taken from him. But not even the townspeople could allow that.

Ending:
While the main adjective was completed (Jamie being found alive and safe), I still felt like the ending had a bittersweet type of tone? Charlie and Flora got away and the book is clearly setting up for the third one. Pip is slowly losing herself despite her realization of who she really is.

Overall, Pippa and Ravi will always live rent free in my head and I hope that by the end of the series, they get a happy ending.

Pip swore she was done with investigating. But when someone she loves goes missing and the police dismiss it, she dives back into the darkness — this time, reluctantly and with consequences. This book is more raw than the first. It’s about trauma, trust, and how seeking justice can also destroy you.

The ending is emotionally brutal but powerful. Pip isn’t just clever here — she’s unraveling, and it’s heartbreaking to watch.

from the beginning, i was so excited to read this because pip is probably my favorite fmc ever. and then she goes and solves another case.

the writing was once again amazing, the plot was addicting, and i just simply couldn’t put it down. i’m so excited to read the 3rd book.
