It took me a bit longer to get into this than it did with the first in the series, I felt like the mystery started slow. But once I got about half way through I felt like the pace really picked up

I did not enjoy this book as much as the first one.
Jamie’s
disappearance and Pip’s subsequent search for
him
felt a little lackluster to me. I did not feel there were enough developments of interest that came from uncovering his secrets.

However, I did find the central reasoning and people of interest uncovered near the end intriguing, albeit dark and grim. If the novel leaned more into that storyline, perhaps from the beginning or from a different angle earlier on, then it may have piqued my interest more. Though admittedly, the central plot was too disturbing for me, the
crimes of Brunswick
, as I don’t like to read about heinous crimes of that nature.

I do like how Pip’s development was explored, her emotions and wrestling internally. The trial of Max Hastings struck a chord with me and I felt for her and all of the people he hurt.

I was surprised not only by the outcome of
the trial
, but also for the demise of
Stanley
and the subsequent
escape of Charlie
. This loose end leaves Pip with something to possibly grapple with in the next book.

Though I did not love the second book, I will still continue with the series and read the third and final one.
