More unbelievable than the first

i LOVED the plot of this book! so fast-paced and interesting

I have to say it again, the crew behind the audiobook did incredible! The actors did great most of the time, they brought the characters to life and made them feel distinctive and alive. The sound effects were again very good too! The music, the recordings, the disguised voice of one of the characters... everything contributed to making this book so much more engaging.

The story starts a bit slower than the first book. This time, one of Pip's friends' brother - Jamie - goes missing, and it's to help her friend that she chooses to embark on another investigation, despite how shaken the previous one left her. The fact that Jamie is missing, not dead (yet), makes Pip feel like she's constantly running out of time. She knows that if she doesn't figure out what happened to him soon, the chances of finding him alive are going to plummet. This leads her to feel a constant sense of dread and responsibility that weighs on her shoulders all the time. It makes sense! For her, it's a matter of life or death!

I liked the way the mystery slowly unraveled, and I found the twist at the end extremely interesting, even though a bit disappointing, considering that there was absolutely no way for the reader to get there along with Pip, or even before her. Still, it made Pip deal with difficult topics and the reality that things are often not all black and white, and it was way more brutal than how I expected.

Pip is, again, a great protagonist. Sometimes I didn't really like the way she spirals, it's a bit annoying in the long run - not because it's not realistic, it is, she's 18 and dealing with a lot of pressure and she deserves to scream into everyone's face, but the way she's written makes it exhausting. It's repetitive, tries too hard to be poetic, and drags everything out. Like, it's hard not to feel annoyed when yet another feeling is crushing Pip's throat, or she feels a hole in her chest swallowing her, or stuff like that, it gets boring real fast! It's a shame, because, again, I like that Pip's mental state is crumbling. She has all my admiration for not committing acts of extreme violence all the time. This girl deserves a break!

Ravi is a breath of fresh air whenever the atmosphere gets too heavy - he's such a lovable and funny character, and his relationship with Pip is adorable.

Anyway, another enjoyable read! It left me really excited to read the third book!

I genuinely enjoyed this series (and more than I'd expected to after putting it off for so long!). The mysteries were compelling, with plenty of developments along the way to keep you intrigued, and the final revelations were always satisfying. Pippa was a great MC and I particularly enjoyed the development of her character & voice across the books (and the way Jackson didn't diminish the impact of her actions & experiences...). I also liked all of the side characters (especially Ravi, of course) and appreciated how they added to the story.

Overall, this was a great mystery book (and series), though I'd be wary of recommending it to younger YA readers because of the dark themes (rape [a lot of rape], murder, sexual assault, assault, drug use, etc etc).
