I am on a roll for stand alone books...
Let's jump right into things
Since I haven't read the original i have to summarize the situation..
We have xiang who has been trapped in a village her entire life with Mr. Feng as a mentor and paid help practically raised her while her mom ran a tea house in canton.
After practically begging her mom to go with her. She finally manages to go with her in the hope of learning thr trade and following her mother’s legacies. She meets ahn who is everything she is not and chaos ensures.
So here's the situation
Pros
- I haven't felt like the story is lacking in anyway.. It was a smooth sail
- I was enraged with the mother. Dragon head and all she is too much of a snot.
- I flet like Xiang deserves better in more ways than one. By the end of the book xiang have lost everything
- the question xiang asks ahn stricks me as everything and nothing in the universe (can you live on love alone?)
Cons
- Because of the nature of the remix. Mr. Feng character is lacking beyond believe. He was not support nor an enemy
- Ahn is..... Meh... I like her alright but I would have loved a bit of cunningness

A thrilling tale of pirates, found family and first love that I can't recommend enough. I tend to enjoy most historical fantasy novels purely because I love the genre, but my favorites are always the ones that tell history's lesser-known stories. With this book, C.B. Lee did exactly that, and it was fantastic.
And oh my god, these two baby lesbians are absolutely adorable. They are now my daughters, I have taken them under my lesbian wing and will protect them at all costs.
Representation:
Representation:
- sapphic Chinese protagonist
- sapphic Vietnamese love interest
- full Asian cast (includes Chinese, Vietnamese, Nepalese, Korean, Thai & Arabic rep)
- sapphic main couple
- achillean side couple
Graphic: Death, Violence, Death of parent
Moderate: Homophobia
Contains three instances of parent death—one prior to the story but mentioned throughout, two on-page. Also contains discussions of homophobia in a historical context.
