Utterly delightful retelling of Treasure Island. I loved how it built on the original story and made it its own.

This book is about finding family and does not shy away from the good and the bad of a family dynamic.

Loved this!! I was expecting a bit more adventure to be honest, but that was definitely in the last quarter because those plot twists were JUICY!! And overall, still a well-written novel. I loved the romance, too!!

3.5

I love a lot of things about this book. The setting, the historical details, the descriptions that make you feel as if you’re living in the time period. Like give me all of the food in this book- talk about yum!! It’s a fun remix and I had no idea there was romance, and a sapphic one at that!

I really enjoyed how the author really did show how naive the MC was from the start. It was consistent and provided a great arc for Xiang. It was fun watching her learn and grow and yearn for more.

There was some intense foreshadowing to me, which made the plot twists anticlimactic, but I’m also older than the target audience.

However, for me, there was some pacing issues, and it seemed to be a lot of set up in the first act. I enjoyed the MC’s voice, so I was still somewhat engaged, but it took a really long time to get to sea. A really long time. I would really have loved more pirate found family scenes instead.

I also didn’t understand the need for the first little scene, and once I figured it out it threw me out of the story to double check things. It felt like unnecessary setup for a reveal that is already being foreshadowed throughout the narrative. However, I haven’t read Treasure Island so there may be some parallels I’m not seeing.

But do I regret reading it? No, I really enjoyed this Treasure Island remix! I love pirates, and I ADORE the historical background focus. It’s really cool and the author took great pains for accuracy in languages and names!

It was a super refreshing read altogether!
