A fast and easy read - it was lovely to see Asian representation in a real ish world in historical contexts instead of fantasy!

This is the Treasure Island retelling I needed. Female pirates, sapphics, and found family were great ways to update the original story. I felt like the plot was also improved upon by altering parts in the original story I was not a fan of.
The sapphic romance was a sweet slow burn that still left room for the MC to have some substantial character growth.
The biggest treat of the novel was learning about the Chinese pirate named Zheng Yi Sao (or Ching Shih). While some of the history is altered for the sake of the story, injecting this historical icon really worked for me.

I really said 'let me show you what you're missing' and it's (not lightskinned) asian sapphics who are (maybe) pirates in search of something more. The something more might be the friends they make along the way (found family), the skills they pick up (swordfighting), or the hidden treasure of the Dragon Fleet.
Or maybe it's the bond they build with each other.
It's 400 pages of multilingual unapologetic queerness and a permission slip to vividly picture Erika Ishii for hours (at least that's what I did). It is a love letter to homelands, to the culture you left behind, and the history within your reach.
It's a queer adventure on a ship and I don't know what to tell you. There's twists at every corner and moments that had me texting my best friend "CLASH OF STEEL HAS A PLOT TWIST SO HARD I GOT WHIPLASH" because I had to tell someone.
Just read it. You can't say you love sword fighting sapphics if you don't want this one. I will vote you off the (treasure) island.

I've never read the original Treasure Island but this was a blast! I've really enjoyed all of the Remixed Classics books so far, they are all such fresh spins on historical fiction.
