A little slow at the start but once it hit its groove it did not slow down. The sapphic romance felt genuine and the setting was well explained with the different cultural nuances. Pretty darn good
I am really excited about the remixed classic series that is launched with this first book, A Clash of Steel. Though it's been a few years since I last read the original Treasure Island, I could immediately tell this captured the spirit and then added some fantastic new elements. There is a lot of great historical aspects of being set near China and Viet Nam, and the inspiration from a real life "Pirate Queen." The main character Xiang is a strong figure and her relationship development with Anh and her family and friends is nice to see. Fun, exciting, full of adventure and emotion, and I enjoyed the author's notes at the end too. Great new series!

Absolutely loved this book! It has characters based in Chinese history, which was neat to read at the end of the book. Also, š!

āSapphic South China Sea Treasure Islandā is an *amazing* pitch for a book, and A Clash of Steel didnāt disappoint!

This was okay for what it was! The romance was cute, yet some points became redundant for me (yes I understand you like her, you donāt have to keep telling me.) The character growth in that aspect was well done. Iām still trying to figure out where the fantasy aspect was though? Pirates are real, treasure is real, so, where was the fantasy element? This felt more historical fiction about Chinese pirates than fantasy. The authors note at the end made me round this from a 2.5 to a 3 star read, that was interesting to learn about.
Just a little too young YA for me!
