“Bring the bear,” he said. “He’s good for us.”

Forget what I said earlier about literary fiction, I struck gold with this. It’s unputdownable and captivating, the writing style works perfectly with its contents. It’s dark and gritty, but the strengthening father-daughter relationship between Nate and Polly brings heart to the novel. It’s tightly plotted and mostly dual perspective, with a few others dotted throughout (which I thought were fantastic additions). And the bear! The descriptions were so vivid and it was great. For me, this book was greater than the sum of its parts and I loved it. Honestly, I don’t really have negatives. Might upgrade to 5 stars when I mull it over more.

It's hard not to love Polly, and eventually grow to love Nate as well. I felt like as they grew to understand each other, I grew to love them both more and more. Polly's development reminds me of my own development and how I went from being very shy to having to burst open that bubble when I started my first job. I couldn't put this book down.

This was very well written, but I didn't like the story line nor all the violence.
Nate has gotten out of prison, but he is the target of a gang that is after him for a murder in prison. The gang targets his ex-wife and 11 year old daughter, Polly. Nate wants to protect them, and takes Polly with him to save her. Polly becomes involved in the robberies and murder spree that Nate takes to try and call off the hit.
Very graphic, lots of drugs, violence, corruption.
