My Dear Henry the retelling of Jekyll & Hyde is still a gothic novel. This version Dr Jekyll is trying to “excise” the gayness out of his son Henry. Henry is in love with Gabriel but the two already face the struggle of being black in Victorian England. Dr Jekyll believes being gay is what will hold Henry back from being a doctor and being excepted into society. Gabriel and Henry first meet in medical school, an experience that’s quite different for students who are not white. On top of that the two are seen together and rumors spread causing both young men to be expelled. This is the catalyst that sets Dr Jekyll off and for the rest of the book Gabriel is trying to solve the mystery that Henry Jekyll becomes. The history woven through the story isn’t anything I was aware of and it is reminder that we need a broader perspective when we are learning history.
