Interesting take on role of literature in thinking about contemporary politics, both Iranian and American.

I’ve read Reading Lolita In Tehran and found it fascinating and a quick read. This one took me two months. I found it slow to start, but I don’t know the books she was referencing. I understood the themes and ideas she explained, but found it quite slow. Once she used books and authors I’ve read, the book raced by and I really appreciated many of her insights.

Powerful. Thought provoking.

Too heavy for right now

Read Dangerously is a collection of essays by Azar Nafisi on her reflections on the power that literature has in provoking thought. From Margaret Atwood's dystopian world of The Handmaid's Tale to Ray Bradbury's book burning society in Farenheit 451, stories have a way of capturing the insanely turbulent times of the present and foretelling a potential future our society is headed towards. Being able to read and learn from these stories, and thus engage in conversation that could then lead to societal and political discourse....that is the challenge that Nafisi encourages everyone to take.
