This event is the very definition of "it was ok."
A clever story idea marred by uneven writing and art, this could have been much better than it was.

I read the single issues years ago and promptly forgot all about them. Fortunately, all this New 52 dreck was retconned away in 2016.

Today, trying to downsize my collection just a little bit, I found a copy of the hardback which I assume I aquired on the cheap (you know, because who else would want it?) and I read through it quickly, skipping through scenes as I began to recall them. What can I write about this abomination, add to the discussion that hasn't already been written? Convergence is a shameless corporate cash-grab aimed at sincere fans of DC's rich but byzantine century of continuity and carried out by a hack Canadian TV writer with absolutely no previous comics writing experience. There are a few interesting moments, a few intriguing bits, but for the most part it's offensive to fans, loyal readers who deserved better for their cash.

While it is nice to see something like this in the DC universe (for heroes to battle heroes), I don't think the plot was carried on quite well.

Nonsense. From start to finish. Let's rehash a dozen old stories. Do you like your favorite characters? How about two versions of them? How about a million? Trying to just SHOVE characters into new areas in future stories? Write some nonsense 'reasons' for it in the final few pages. THE END. Job well done everyone. In the words of Charles Barkley. Turrible. Just turrible.

I would not recommend this book at all. I understand that DC had to put out *something* while they moved from NY to Burbank, as well as "officially" christening any character iteration in the 'verse, but that's all you need to know. This sucked. Clunky dialogue, contrived plot, basic art.

Bumped it up to 2 stars for the line: "But then he'd be as weak as Green Lantern! (No offense.)" I'm always going to greet a Hal Jordan drag with goodwill.

I have to admit, I've always loved retellings.

That's why I'm so fond of the Elseworlds books. I really liked the annuals that came out in the mid-90s. And that's why I was so looking forward to reading Convergence.

There was so much potential. But I fear it didn't live up to what it could have.

This combines Convergence #0-8.

Unfortunately, the first several issues were all over the place. Telos pitting city against city seems simple enough, but the storyline is a bit confusing and difficult to follow.

But I have to admit the father-son stuff struck a chord with me.

But back to the story - I thought it got a little better as the plot completely changes and we move to what this is all about.

The multiverse. There are a few pages and a few spreads that focused on the different universes and the characters within each. These were wonderful. They might actually make cool posters.

If we could have had 2 things, this would have been much better: a tighter story bringing the universes together, and better interaction between the heroes of the different universes. There was so much to work with, but it all got lost in a convoluted story.

Thanks to NetGalley and DC Comics for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
