I loved this fast paced thriller by new (to me) author Claire Seeber. I raced through it in no time, not wanting to stop until I had reached the last thrilling page. Definitely an author I will look out for in the future.

A fabulous 4 stars.

My full review will be posted within the next few days.

This was quite a captivating story that was really enjoyable in parts. However, I didn’t really feel any connection to the characters, so it can’t say I loved it. The story was well written, though, so I was still interested in what was happening.

The story is told in alternating chapters, switching between ‘now’ and ‘then’. The ‘now’ part of the story tells of what happened after the fire that killed the main character, Laurie’s, best friend. I really liked some of the characters that were introduced in the later parts of these chapters, and I was glad to see them pop up in the epilogue. These chapters were high-tension and very exciting to read. The ‘then’ chapters, however, were often slow and dull in comparison.

It took me awhile to get into the story, and it was really only the last third that truly engaged me. Throughout the story, the main character, Laurie, had a whole lot going on in her life, so she was a bit of a mess. I just couldn’t relate to any of it, so I couldn’t connect with her. It was only when events started to ramp up, and the different parts of the story started coming together, that I felt truly drawn in.

There are quite a few important topics discussed in this book. Laurie is going through a divorce, with her young daughter, Polly, stuck in the middle. There main issue in here is domestic violence, and there is quite a bit of great discussion of it throughout. I found this to be a really strong point for the book, and it made me strongly sympathetic towards Laurie and all she was going through.

I think this book would be really enjoyable for many. However, as I didn’t feel invested in the characters, I struggled to love it. It was definitely a strong psychological thriller that was filled with enough of red herrings to make it exciting, but not tiresome. Overall, a really solid story that many would enjoy.

I read this in one sitting, I was totally absorbed in the story and didn't want to put it down until I finished.

The twists in the story are numerous, and some aren't even revealed until the very end. The lies are difficult to decipher, the truths are so well hidden it would take someone better than me to figure them all out before the author shares them!

This was a really good psychological thriller. I highly recommend it to fans of this genre as it will most definitely keep you on the edge throughout.

Rating: 5*

Synopsis:

Here today. Dead tomorrow?

My best friend, Emily, is dead – killed last night in a hotel fire.
But it was meant to be me.
Now I have 24 hours to find my daughter.
Before he finds out I’m still alive.

Rating:

I found this psychological thriller hard to put down and found myself in the unusual position of being even more confused than Laurie, the lead character. It became impossible for me to predict who, if indeed anyone, was out to get her - by the time I'd been dragged around all the twists and turns, I was feeling rather dizzy!

I was really impressed by the author's style of writing and fantastic story-telling. 24 Hours is an original, gripping, remarkable novel that I defy any reader of the genre not to enjoy.

Thanks to Kim at Bookouture for the opportunity to read this captivating book.

24 Hours by Claire Seeber

5 stars.

Laurie Smith, long sufferring wife of Sid Smith, turner prize winner of very dark paintings. She has escaped a fire that has taken the life of her best friend Emily. Laurie believes infestimely that the fire was started to kill her not Emily. Why does she believe this? Why would anyone want to kill her? Laurie rushes to find her her daughter Polly who is travelling back from France with her grandmother before the murder does. Who can she trust? The young man Saul, that gets her in more trouble? Sid, her estranged husband? Or the ever mysterious Mal?

I enjoyed the storytelling style of this book. It alternated between the Then and now, so to give the historical evidence of how Laurie got to this point, quite often leaving you with more questions or suspects rather than clearing anything up. The only thing I was left wondering what the true story was with a certain ex wife??

"but one part of me will never ever be sorry. Because I was living, until the very last part, I was living every inch of life.

It started strong but then too many characters introduced, the back and forth timeline was confusing and it was difficult to guess who the antagonist really was (was there one?) The story went everywhere after, I really wanted to like this but it just didn't work for me.

If you like a book with plenty of twists you will find plenty of them in this novel. I was pretty much addicted straight away and there was only one section where it went a little slower. It didn't stop me enjoying it though, it was just a little less frantic.
To say Laurie was a bit of a mess would be an understatement, a counsellor who could do with listening to her own advice. Separated from an abusive husband who still controlled her and she liked another man who was either a liar or his ex wife was.Just as I thought she would have a little luck something would happen and she would end up in more of a predicament. Most of the characters who featured could have been responsible for what happened, I had no idea at all who it could be.
The chapters alternated between 'then and now'. I liked both equally and was glad that they were only short so I could see what happened next in just a couple of pages.
It's easily a book that could be read in one sitting, although I read it over a few days.

With thanks to the publisher for the copy received for review.

What a whirlwind of a book 24 Hours is.

I honestly feel like I've been on a roller coaster ride where the author is at the controls and they won't let me off.

As the title suggests, 24 Hours is actually a story that flicks between chapters of Laurie's past leading up to present day and different times of the day in the present.

Laurie is adamant that someone is trying to kill her. After waking up to discover her best friend Emily has been killed in a fire, Laurie then is left in a race against time to find her daughter Polly and find out once and for all who wants rid of her.

There are so many suspects in the novel that this is why I was left feeling dizzy. I did not know whether I was coming or going. I felt like a dog with a bone, thinking that I had got it for the story to only go off in a whole other direction and sent on another chase to see if I could work out who it was.

24 Hours is definitely a novel where you really need to concentrate as there are literally so many twists and turns. It certainly makes for a very exhilarating reading experience.

Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an Advanced Readers Copy of this book.
