A collection of snippets from other nonfiction works and letters by Lewis that cover his love of reading and the importance of being a reader. A simple, yet profound, little book.

This selected collection of C.S. Lewis' thoughts on reading was surprisingly relevant to current conversations on the defense of fantasy, children's books, and popular reading. It was also a surprise to find out how much of a fan that C.S. Lewis was of Jane Austen.

This is a very short listen as an audiobook. The first half essays and the second half shorter quotations. Just get this the first essay, which is the densest one.

This sweet little book of snippets of Lewis' writings was nice airplane reading this month.

2 favorite lines:

Why children's stories are not just for children: "Young things ought to want to grow...when I became a man, I put away childish things including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Saving words from the eulogistic abyss: "but it will really be a great nuisance if the word Christian becomes simply a synonym for good"

C.S. Lewis on reading and books. Lewis's language can be a tad hard to follow at times, but he's so brilliant and insightful I forgive him swiftly. If I wasn't reading a library copy, it'd be pretty marked up. As it was, I took a ton of pics of my fav quotes.

"When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
