A darkly funny fairytale mash-up, with kick-ass heroines. It had less romance than I like in my fairytales, but made up for it with fantastic world building and engaging characters.
A refreshingly dark take on the story of our wonderful little mermaid. I wish I could continue on with the rest of them as I currently finished buying the set, but other books I have been eagerly awaiting have finally wormed their way onto my shelves. So, I shall shelve this pretty good series for now and delve into the books I know I can't put down.
I like this series, action, intrigue, twisted fairy tale, a little dark & adult but not too much.
IT'S FANTASTIC! I love The Stepsister Scheme, but this sequel is even better. Learning more about the characters and watching them grow is just as interesting as it is amusing to watch them interact with each other. It's a great swashbuckling adventure about a trio of butt-kicking princesses (Cinderella, SnowWhite, and Sleeping Beauty) out to save their queen and The Little Mermaid. This ridiculous amount of fun, adventure, personality, and delightful banter is swiftly becoming one of my favourite series. I can't find fault in it.

Wow. So "totally awesome" and "best Valentine's Day present" only begin to describe the love I have for this book. Although I could have easily and gladly spent my weekend tearing through it, I painfully made this book last from Valentine's Day until the night of the 19th. This book had everything I could ask for. Magic. Princesses. Danger. Mermaids. Swords. It was just...fantastic. I was scared it was going to be cheesy or stupid but it was quite the opposite.
The fact that I have been reading all these fairy-taleish books and one I've never heard of gets plopped into my lap and blows my world amazes me. My boyfriend finds it by accident and gives it to me :] It is actually the second in a series, but it reads like an original book. I love Snow, Talia, Danielle, everyone! I love that these princesses are badass, kicking ass and taking names instead of sitting around primly drinking tea...and yet it works! The mermaid lore and anatomy is fascinating. All in all, if someone set out to write a book I would love, this is it ♥

Danielle, Talia, Snow, and Queen Beatrice head out to sea to meet the King of the Undine, but instead are confronted by his daughter, Lirea, bent on revenge. Queen Beatrice is wounded, and now the three women must seek out a way to save Beatrice and restrain Lirea.

I found out about Jim C. Hines through his AMAZING series of blog posts about the over-sexualized nature of women on covers of books. Please, go check it out now. I'll be here when you're done.
*Five hours later and copious buckets of laughter*
There, that was certainly worth your time, wasn't it?
Anyway, Hines seems to be a top-notch fellow, so why WOULDN'T I want to support such an all-around cool guy? And this book seems really fascinating - a real life Ariel story? Where-in grittiness and non-Disneyfication occur?

When it came to actually reading the book for Book Club (and my 2014 goal to not buy new books/to read those books on my shelves), I felt my heart crash to the floor.
I just don't care!
I find myself using any excuse not to read this book, even though it was MY BOOK CLUB CHOICE! I read MULTIPLE comic trade paperbacks in this time. I read Goodreads Giveaway books. I surfed my phone and my Kindle. And yet I couldn't coerce myself to read much into this book.
So that means this book must be TERRIBLE, right? I mean, I've powered through many a book that I ended up rating 1- or 2- stars, so this should be a 2- star or lower rating, right?
No.
Because this book is GOOD. It's light-hearted and fun and perfect for reading at the beach or on a warm summer day. It's just not the book I want to read.
I love how Hines has multiple female characters in this book. I love how 90% of the cast is female. I love how he's written these women with all these different strengths, weaknesses, hopes, dreams, and backgrounds. I love how he's done a twisted fairy tale.
But I don't want to read any more of this book! I don't really care to know how Danielle, Talia, and Snow restraint Lirea. I have zero investment in the story and characters. Everything's good - but me.
So Jim, if you are reading, I'm sorry I didn't like your book. I really truly am. You are a great guy and did nothing wrong with this (well, it *IS* a bit cheesy, but you are 100% forgiven for that - not ALL books have to be Sris Bizness after all). I'm just too much of a sourpuss, I guess, to like it.
If you want strong, independent female characters from all walks of life, who don't faint and wait for a man to rescue them, if you like twisted fairy tales, if you like light-hearted fantasy books, pick this up!! I'm sure you will greatly enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book. At first it took a bit to get used to the switching of perspectives but I found as that went on I wanted more of it. I feel like the stories end with a satisfying closure that isn't exactly a "happy ever after" and I like that. Sure the good guys win, but there are a lot of trade offs in that win. I can't wait to read the next.
This series is fun, first we have fairytales, second kick-ass heroines. What's not to like.
Cinderella, Snow and Sleeping Beauty (they do have other names but whatever) have to solve one big problem here. A mad mermaid. And since this follows the real fairytales, and not those nice silly Disney ones, then yeah the mermaid's prince was a d#ck. Just like Talia's prince was a d#ck. But Cinderella/Danielle's prince is a keeper.
So we have a mad mermaid and her followers attacking and sinking ships. There will be adventures on the sea, princesses to save and mysteries to solve.
There is humor, friendship and adventures. A nice light fantasy series
